The Story

This discarded patio table sat in an alley of my Glover Park neighborhood of D.C. for several weeks before I finally broke down and took it back to my crowded basement work space. Originally, it probably had a glass top, but that was missing; it had no bottom shelf. I used a wire brush to clean up the metal, then spray painted it metallic “Rose Gold “by Rust-Oleum. I cut two pieces of 1/8 inch thick underlayment to fit into the top frame and to span the lower rails to create a bottom shelf. I sorted through my collection of salvaged pallet wood and found to my great surprise that I could exactly achieve the desired overall widths of both surfaces without trimming the width of any of the individual pieces! I chose pieces that with contrasting grains for visual interest. I removed nails, did a lot of sanding, applied Minwax “Red Mahogany” stain, and finished with three coats of Minwax water-based clear satin Polycrylic. Then I attached the boards to the underlayment pieces with glue. The top shelf is attached to frame with screws, and the bottom shelf attached is attached to the two original crossbars with Liquid Nails. Although its first life was spent outdoors, the new finishes won’t stand up to the elements, so the table should live indoors from now on.
