The Story

I was running up 34th Street and Reno Rd., NW, one day and spotted a dumpster at the corner of Rodman Street, where a house renovation was underway. I peeked over the edge and saw this table. I guess someone was tired of it. It was discolored, certainly needed some cleaning/polishing, and it had no top, but I saw its underlying original beauty and potentially significant value. So, a couple hours later I drove back there and rescued it. And this ended up being just a restoration project, rather than a more typical upcycling project. To restore its original luster, I spent close to two hours scrubbing it with a sponge and a good portion of a large container of Bar Keepers Friend. It still shows its age through slight color variation, but that just helps people appreciate its vintage roots, and it is otherwise in very good condition. Polish it once in a while to keep it gleaming. For the top, I bought a nice, thick piece of glass, with polished edges—which is probably what it had originally—for $50, from Columbia Mirror & Glass of Springfield, Virginia.
